The decadent writers were deeply influenced by the concept of living the life intensely, following an ideal of Beauty. This concept can be synthesized in the slogan "Art for Art's sake" (L'art pour l'art).

The artists and writers of this movement tended to believe that the Arts should provide refined sensuous pleasure, rather than convey moral or sentimental messages. Also they believed that Art did not have any didatic purpose, it only had to be beautiful. The Aesthetes developed the cult of beauty, which they considered the basic factor in Art.
